Christmas 2020

 Christmas 2020

By May K

Empty chairs and vacant halls
Lonely streets and quiet malls
Christmas is here, the façade's the same
But oh everything seems so changed

Absence and echoes where there were none before
Missing footprints on the snow fall
A screen on a phone for a smile to our face
A meal alone instead of a gathering place

Oh where's the Christmas heart and cheer?
Where’s the spirit that rejoices the year?
Where's the laughter? The joy? The fun?
Where's the promise? Where's the Son?

Sometimes it feels to ask in vain
In the silent tomb of pain
Sometimes it feels like empty space
Is all the fills this gathering place

Yet as the lone meal is set
I hear a voice saying, “Don’t forget!”
And somehow it seems to me
This place isn’t quite so empty

For a promise has filled the void
A remembrance I can’t avoid
Of times now past, of times to be
That our now is not eternity

And at the table, across time and space
I see into that eternal place
Where all are gathered together as one
To celebrate the birth of the Son

I see them there, our family
Unbroken by sorrow or misery
Cheers and laughter with glasses raised
The air singing with songs of praise

A promise, a remembrance, as the vision fades
And before me the lone meal is laid
For though this moment we must be strong
It’s to that hope that we belong

So as I sit alone, I’ll pray
And say thanks for this Christmas day
For that promise to which I hold on
And Thank God for my savior was born

Merry Christmas, Everyone. Still.

Christmas’ gift

Christmas’ gift

By May Kwek

Christmas is a time most dear
A time of wondrous giving
When the goodwill of all the year
Fills the air with blessing

When smiles grace every face
A gift to themselves and all
And music plays in every place
And there always seems to be more

When friends send cards and letters
With just simple greetings
But what really matters
Is the thoughts that they are bringing

When family can gather around
And put simply put aside
The subjects that make so many frown
And sit round the fire’s light

Oh yes Christmas is filled with joy
From these little presents
And every little girl and boy
Learns that this is the reason

That Christmas is such a wonderful thing
Because it is always giving
It is the spirit with which the air sings
It is the song of rejoicing

For with Christmas came
The greatest gift of all
The one with the dearest of names
Our Saviour, born for all

Merry Christmas!

Have you heard?

Have you heard?

By May Kwek

There is a gossip in the marketplace
There is a rumour in Bethlehem
Listen! Listen!
Can you hear them?

“Have you heard?” in a voice low
The women quietly say
That the King invited 3 wise men
To dine with him today?

I have heard they carry great gifts
Myrrh, frankincense and gold
Why are they coming here?
What stories have they been told?

“Have you heard?” in a voice of awe
The men quietly whisper
That Zachariah speaks again?
And Elizabeth is a mother?

They say the child is named John
That he will be the voice in the wilderness
Imagine, just imagine
Who he will herald in greatness!

“Have you heard?” in joyous laughter
The children ask as they play
I’ve heard a voice in the wind whisper
That the Angels will sing today!

I wonder why they are singing
Is something happening today?
I have asked mother and I have asked father
But they haven’t heard so they say

“Have you heard?” in exultation
Asks the Angels on high
A miracle is about to happen
Oh let out a glorious cry!

Oh Bethlehem! They cry
As they gather to sing
Have you heard? They ask
You will welcome the King!

“And have you heard?” in a mighty voice
Asks the Almighty God
I have descended from heaven
To with the lowest trod

For tonight I will come
And be among my creation
For you whom I dearly love
I’ve come to bring salvation!

Oh have you heard?

Finding our Christmas Light

Finding our Christmas Light

By May Kwek

The days have passed in a blur
And now it’s Christmas night
How strange it feels, so serene
It’s an oddly peaceful night

The days between have not been pleasant
Madmen acted and lives were lost
The earth has shaken, storms raged
Peace has held but at terrible cost

The struggle to keep it Christmas
Has been brutal with spirits this low
Sometimes it seemed dancing on the edge
Ready to fall with a careless blow

So I searched again for that Christmas star
And I found it tonight
High up in the dark night sky
Oddly small and not too bright

But it was constant, ever constant
Nothing could cause it to fade
It cannot be blocked, it cannot be stopped
For eternity it had been made

And I know now that it will glow always
Hope shinning in the night
Nothing on earth nor in hell
Can ever block out that light

So although there’s no tree this year
And thus nothing festive to light
It is Christmas still
And that Child’s our eternal Christmas light

Merry Christmas

Fighting for Christmas Faith

Fighting for Christmas Faith

By May Kwek

Christmas has come around again this year
But I must confess I feel no cheer
Rather it feels like Annus Horribilis
In other words, a horrible year

The world I knew has departed
Everything seems to have changed
Peace now feels on the brink of danger
And really, the world just got strange

So no tree decorates our home
The lights on the street are cold and empty
It all seems so superficial
Is this Christmas really?

I look up to the stars for an answer
Seeking the one from 2000 years ago
The one that guided to a poor manger
That winter night so cold

And it shone in my mind so bright
Such a contrast to the dark of night
And led me down a quiet walk
Where with a shepherd I could talk

But he never spoke a word
Only raised his arm and I knew
That soldiers descended to Bethlehem
To a thousand children slew

It was the first Christmas night
Forgot I truly had
That hope was born in a world so dark
And in a night so black

Yet how it shone, how it shone
The skies opened and the angels sang
There was a celebration in that little manger
Despite the world so dark and dank

Our hope is a hope for the ages
And Christmas’ joy from hereafter comes
So this Christmas will be graced with a feast nevertheless
And I’ll open the door to whoever and still say ‘Welcome’

Immanuel, God is with us
Still

Merry Christmas

A fiery Christmas

A fiery Christmas

By May Kwek

It’s been quite a Christmas
In our expensive Orchard road
Things have been catching fire
It’s a wonder business has not slowed

First it was the Christmas tree
Just sitting by the side of the road
Then in a flash of flame
Its ornaments it did unload

Then it was the décor
Hanging on a street light
First it shone with electric brilliance
And then with crimson light

Third was a poor restaurant
That was somehow set ablaze
Now how did that happen?
The sprinkler I can’t praise

And now do I hear a fourth?
Hidden in a carpark, a flaming pile of rubbish
Perhaps with the wall,
They couldn’t it distinguish

Oh please no more!
This is turning into a bad comedy
Once, twice, I forgive you
But four is insanity

They must have struck everywhere in Orchard road
These mysterious ‘arsonists’
Having hit sky and ground
What else could they have missed?

Ah I see it now
I will shop elsewhere instead
Because the only place not yet aflame
Is I fear, my head!

A Christmas Hope

A Christmas Hope

By May Kwek

Christmas time this year
Comes at the tail of a rather sad year
Many terrible things have happened
And too many of us have lost those we held dear

We have seen bloodshed and violence
Caused by acts of cowardice
We have felt the earth shake
And rocks crumble and break

Waters swelled, the air turned poison
Yet despite all, to carols we still listen
In one more leap of faith
Come this time we still celebrate

Yes we still celebrate
To honour those who could not
Celebrate to show triumph
That hope we’ve still got

For the hope that Christmas brings
Came two thousand years ago
And against such miraculous hope
Modern horrors have no hold

So we will light our streets
And we will deck our halls
We will come in spite of fear
When the church bell calls

And come Christmas Day
Despite the horrors that have come to past
We will grow that hope’s eternal flame
Against which fear’s darkness cannot last

In memory to all who have left us, and a blessed Christmas to those who remain
Immanuel, God is with us

Christmas' Song

Christmas' Song

By May Kwek

Oh rejoice it is Christmas!
The brightest day of the year
Even if not apparent in the sky
Our hearts are filled with cheer!

There is a song in the air
It has been singing since the morn
Can you hear what it is saying?
That the Savior is born!

Oh it is a grand old song
That has been played for thousands of years
But on Christmas day
Is when it seems near

It is a song that fills my heart
That adds a spring in my step
A joy that can’t be torn apart
That for a year has slept

This song that rises through the air
And fills the hearts of men
Seeks out their hurts and then
Slowly helps them mend

This joy that makes one want to sing
To jump into the sky and take wing
This is the joy of the Christmas morn
It is the joy that the Savior is born!

This is what makes Christmas Christmas
More than any Christmas tree
More than a truck load of presents
Tucked under the tree

More than traditions and dinners
And laughter with family
Not that these aren't important
But none can make me as happy

As the joy
That my Savior's birth has given
That one day soon
We will be with him in heaven

And that thanks to his gift
We shall never be apart
And for that Christmas’s joy
Shall ever be in my heart!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Why Christmas

Hey everyone, I am back! A'levels are over and I can write again. So here's a Christmas poem for you all. Merry Christmas everyone! And a Happy New Year!

Why Christmas

By May Kwek

You and I weren’t there
On that first Christmas night
We heard no song, no baby’s cry
Didn’t even see the star’s light

Yet we celebrate Christmas
So many years later
About two thousand years
If I correctly remember

Why? We may well ask
It was so long ago
Why celebrate something
And celebrate so much so?

“Presents”
The youngest of us would say
And Santa Claus and Rudolph
In their merry sled

“Family”
The more elder of us would reply
To meet again with our loved ones
To chat beyond more than “Hi”

“Food”
I can almost hear
My more mischievous friends saying
Then secretly shaking their heads saying it’s fattening

But why? Truly why?
Christmas was always so much more
Presents, food and family
That can’t be all

I think it is the same reason
The angels sang that night
And three kings came visiting
Following the star light

It was because unseen by most
Asleep in the hay
God made into man
Our saviour lay

Merry Christmas Everyone!

What I am thankful for this Christmas

What I am thankful for this Christmas

By May Kwek

Christmas is once again here
The time of giving and the time of cheer
But most of all it is the time
To be thankful for the blessings this year

I have so much to be thankful for
I know not where to start
Thankful I can see and feel
Thankful for each beat of my heart

For the family and friends
Their love and their care
For the times we’ve spent together
The memories that we share

Thankful for opportunities
The laughter and the tears
Thankful for God’s grace
When alone and in fear

Thankful that I am able to give
That I have plenty on my side
Thankful for the chance
To show love and do right

To learn and to grow
Each and every day
Thankful for the kindness
Received in every way

But most of all I am thankful
That if everything that was given was gone
I would be received at heaven’s door
Because my Saviour was born

Merry Christmas everyone!

Immanuel's Star

Immanuel's Star

By May Kwek

The night was cold and dark
The shepherds drew lambs to their hearts
Across the valleys and hills a cool wind blew
Drawing the grass apart

Huddling by the fire
A shepherd sang a song
Poking a crackling fire
Ready for the night so long

 Then a bright light
Caught his dazzled eyes
And he turned them heavenward
Towards the star studded sky

And behold there was a star
Shinning in the night
Eclipsing all others
With its beauty and light

It drew and beckoned
And suddenly the heavens burst open
The air was filled with angel songs
And by the star’s light the shepherds were drawn

Towards a little village
Of seemingly no importance
Worn down with age
Completely impassioned

The atmosphere was joyful
Yet apprehensive as they drew nearer
To a newly born child
Asleep in the manger

His hands shaking slightly
The shepherd touched the child
He stirred and looked up
And a miracle he smiled!

Then a while later
The shepherd was back at his fire
Gazing up at the star
His heart felt warmer

And he watched never knowing
That it was the first Christmas night
And the star shinning so brightly
Was the Saviour’s heralding light

Merry Christmas everyone!

The First Christmas Day and Night

The first Christmas day and night

By May Kwek

Many years ago on this night
Over Bethlehem a star shone bright
And God came to earth as man
To save us from death’s eternal hand

Many years ago on this day
Three men who had travelled a long way
Came with gifts for the king
And that night did angels sing

When the choir from heaven sang
Shepherds left their flocks with thanks
To see the saviour for themselves
And realise heaven’s intangible wealth

So many years ago on this day and night
The earth received a bright new light
And the hope of salvation was born that day
As the baby who in the manger lay

Happy Birthday Immanuel
God with us

Do you remember?

Do you remember?

By May Kwek

Do you remember your first present?
The brightly coloured wrapping and dreams?
Do you remember the tree and the lights?
And your mother serving ice-cream?

Do you remember
The first time you heard Christ’s story?
Do you remember
How you felt about his glory?

Do you remember
The games that you played?
Do you remember
The fond memories of Christmas day?

And now the time for remembrance
Has come again
And I only want to ask this
Do you remember Christmas my friend?

Christmas Time

Christmas time

By May Kwek

A time to remember the gifts of the year
Of the sunlit presents in our earthly sphere
A time to remember what we’ve received
The gentle smiles like angel wings

A time to spend with those we hold dear
With friends and family all in good cheer
A time to laugh over things of the past
And ensure our bonds will always last

A time to celebrate our saviour’s birth
And remember why he came to earth
A time to keep him in our hearts
And forgive others for their deeds in the past

A time to rejoice and to celebrate
The giving and receiving we’ve had of late
And to spread around the Christmas cheer
Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!

Christmas shopping

Christmas shopping

By May Kwek

To be honest I don’t like shopping
But at Christmas it’s a need
It’s lucky it doesn’t stem from greed
Or I would have squashed it like a weed

At this time however reluctant
I venture into the malls
Staying away from the large stacks
Fearing they might fall

I then enter the shops
Taking nervous little stops
Looking at this and at that
And wondering if anyone needs a hat

I wonder what each person would want
Then try to hunt it down
And if I am lucky
I’ll find something else as well

I squeeze through the crowds
Which often talk too loud
And avoid the sales ladies
Who have too much to tell

All in the quest
To find the perfect present
With “what would they like”
As the deciding question

Then after the long queues
And the agonising waits
I’ll usually have a few
Presents on my plate

And now I can find a seat
And admire the Christmas lights
Then in amazement
Find that it’s already night

And I’ll rush home quickly
To beginning with the wrapping
At the same time remembering
How I hate Christmas shopping

A letter to Santa from a spoiled kid

A letter to Santa from a spoiled kid

By May Kwek

Dear Santa how do you do?
I promise I’ve been good
Here’s my Christmas wish list
I hope you will be in a giving mood

There’s a lot I want for Christmas
And you better get them right!
I want a helicopter and a bike
With a bright head light

I want chocolates and goodies
And sweets and cakes galore
You will need your big sack
Cause I want them all!

I want the tree to have many
Very many presents
In fact there should be more
Than I got last Christmas!

I want a large stack of notes
To buy many things
And a maid to pick up my books
And socks and other things

I want Daddy to earn more money
And Mummy to buy less
I want a new TV
And a computer only the best!

I want more video games
And that no one gives me books
Oh and a birch rod on my teacher
When she gives me dirty looks

Have you got that all Santa?
This letter you have to mind
Or I will have Daddy
Give you a piece of his mind!

Yours Sincerely,
The spoiled kid

A Christmas Poem

A Christmas poem

By May Kwek

Here Christmas has no snow
No bells to ring or bitter cold
There’re not many presents and the tree is sparse
But there is Christmas in our hearts

Here we appreciate
That Santa cannot ride his sled
The trees are high and I’m afraid
That he would crash his sled instead

But it is fine and all is well
Christmas time is simply swell
For it is the joy with which we celebrate
That makes the season really great!

It is the joy that makes it Christmas
Not Santa Claus and trees
It is the hope that makes it Christmas
Not the carols that we sing

For it’s on Christmas that we celebrate
The miracle of the light
Of the birth of our saviour
That first Christmas night

So the snow doesn’t matter
And neither does the cold
For it’s the Christmas in our hearts
That makes the season glow

Merry Christmas Everyone
