Round the walls of Jericho

Round the walls of Jericho

By May Kwek

I don’t understand why we are doing this
I am warrior, we are trained to fight
But Joshua has us marching round this wall
Ever since first light

Shouldn't we storm the city?
Look the people jeer from the walls!
Anger courses through me
Do they think we are that small?

Shall we not fight back?
What will this walking do?
In absolute silence we march
And waiting for God too

Six days he said we will march
And on the seventh blow our horns
Though I remember he gave water in deserts parched
What good is blowing a horn?

No, this doesn't make sense
I try to tell Joshua so
But he told me to march on
On the Lord’s word we will go

Days pass and the seventh is here
I carefully raise my horn
Together we blow loudly
The loudest since we were born

The next second feels
Like a sound from hell
I feel a rumble and turn around
Oh my God! The wall fell!

Reflections on reading A Picture of Dorian Gray

Reflections on reading A Picture of Dorian Gray

By May Kwek

Good Lord human depravity!
Sown in the Garden of Eden
Human hands and cruelty
The worst scream I’ve ever listened

Murder and selfishness
Lost in carnal delights
The corruption of souls and innocence
Blotted out like a candle at night

How can the pure and good?
Be lost in the waves of sin?
In the midst of depravity
No one knows how blind they’ve been

Consumed with one’s self
Till it’s an empty shell
Wallowing in selfish pleasures
Unaware it’s the herald of hell

Oh let the watchers watch!
And the listeners listen!
Mind the tale!
The story that was written

Fall not into the trap
Of the easy way to hell
The soul is a precious thing
Pray! Keep it well!

The worry thief

The worry thief

By May Kwek

When we were there
By the autumn sea
Watching the wind
The tide, the sea

Watching the sunset
 On the sandy bay
Wondering at the future
Of another day

Looking at the clouds
 Through unseeing eyes
Hearing the birds
As they flew up high

We thought we were enjoying
The ocean and the waves
But our minds were really
In deep miserable caves

So while we were there
With the land and sea
We did not see anything
You and me
