Pirates

Pirates

By May Kwek

One thing I can not understand
Is why pirates are so admired
After all they are but men
Who perhaps of life are tired

Perhaps it is the dream
Of living wild and free
Servant to no man
Only to God and Sea

Or maybe it is the adventures
With stories and sword fights
Of gold, silver and jewels
That shine like stars at night

But then if this is true
I find it rather sad
Because a pirate is but a fancy thief
With a parrot and hat

Seasick

Seasick

By May Kwek

You know that I love the sea
And on it I ought to be happy
But sadly I find that this is not to be
For sea sickness has stricken me

I remember being on the Pacific
On a bright blue day
Going out to see the whales
And following them all the way

At first I was excited
As excited as a child
But throughout the four hours
I was sea sick all the while

To see the waves rise
And watch another ship disappear
To feel the ship rocking
As though balancing on a sphere

To stare at the far off shore
And will it to come closer
To say I can stand no more
And that the trip is hard labour

No words can truly describe
How awfully bad I felt
But I now know I won’t get on a boat
Unless it can’t be helped

Sleeping in a Lecture

Sleeping in a Lecture

By May Kwek

No matter how hard I seem to try
The lecturer's voice is like a lullaby
Gently lulling me to sleep
Into dreamland dark and deep

It is awfully hard to resist
The lecture hall's sleepy mist
I really fight! I really try!
But the next moment I'm in the sky

And so in dreams I continue to be
Where a moments feels like an eternity
Until a voice awakens me
From my dreams on the sea

"Will someone wake up that girl up there?"
And everyone turns around to stare
"I am sorry is all I can say
Before trying to stay awake the rest of the day

My way to cheer up

My way to cheer up

By May Kwek

My solution to an upset mind
Is very simple as you will find
First you take up some time
And add the happiest book you can find

Now you must read it to the end
Yes, yes, read on my friend!
Let your mind be absorbed in the story
And never think about what made you sorry

Use the book or whatever you will
To warm your heart from the chill
Use it to move on, to forget
And not let troubles catch you in their nets

Then the next time you want to sigh
Use the memories to distract your mind
And you will find that you brighten up in some way
Though perhaps not all the way

A Schooling of Fear

A Schooling of Fear

By May Kwek

Fear! Fear! An aura of fear!
Simply because an exam is here
Be afraid you will fail your test!
Be afraid that you won't be the best!

Such is the message drilled in our hearts
A follower of fear lest it breaks us apart
Weren't we supposed to be using our heads?
Why is education a competition instead?

Tuition classes, enrichment and all!
Even for children as young as four!
All because of this terrible fear
We'll do anything for first to be near

We will study all day and night
Following your passion is just not right
No, we must study every day
And we won't let anything get in our way!

Fear! Fear! Can you hear?
Your death knell is sounding, it is quite near
Because I refuse to be a follower of your way
Now get lost! You shall not stay!

The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden

By May Kwek

Hidden away so no one can see
Is a place wild and free
Where the grasses grow everywhere
And the sun shines without a care

Where the Spring bursts out with a leap
There no man can find reason to weep
Where the summer is flowers in full bloom
And night is the beauty of the stars and moon

In there the waters are always clear
And in the wind God seems ever so near
Where the bright blue skies brings laughter to the eyes
And no one shall any reason to sigh

There the ivy creeps on the walls
And the mighty trees stand proud and tall
Where an invalid boy in the face of laughter
Can stand up and say, "I will get better!"

Hope's song

Hope’s song

By May Kwek

One day as I was moaning
About the troubles in my life
I heard a bird singing
That everything would be fine

It sang so wonderfully
 That I almost believed
But part of me still asked
How could this be?

But the song still sang
And put hope in the air
The silver lining it told me
 Must surely be there

To believe in the future
So that I could have today
To believe that the past is over
That it has gone away

I am still learning
But believe I eventually will
And when I look beside me
I see the singing bird still

The forest in a dream

The forest in a dream

By May Kwek

When life is hectic with its ups and downs
I’d like to take a trip out of town
To visit the forest in my dreams
And lay down beside the gentle stream

There all is quiet, peaceful and serene
Filled with wonders yet unseen
Where the only sound in the air
Is the gentle water flowing without a care

Around me are giants
Growing above the moss
And when the wind blows
Their leaves they gladly toss

There is a misty peace
Lingering in the air
And when the sun shines through the trees
Its glow it gladly shares

There I feel content
And my burdens I gladly shed
And deeper into the forest I go
Wherever I am led

I will explore and see
A great many things
Then finally by the stream
I will awake from my dream

Playing on the Star Wars Kinect

Playing on the Star Wars Kinect

By May Kwek

Wow all I can say is this
That this is one of the best funs there is
I know I am girl but I won’t resist
It is too fun for me to desist

It’s great to wave the light sabre about
And to sometimes jump and shout
To use the Force to make things fly
And never have to worry about being shy

To dodge and then quickly dash
To jump and take a well timed slash
To leap from high places and not take a fall
In fact I feel nothing at all!

But sadly I do get tired
Which is especially bad when blasters are fired
But never mind I’ll just swing my arms to deflect
And let sheer movement make up for what skills I lack!

Our own way to shine

Our own way to shine

By May Kwek

When I was a child who liked to mimic things
My parents would smile and sometimes wink
Then my sister would do something I could not do
And dare me to try and mimic that if I could

I would try and through experience find
That we each have our own ways to shine
So while I couldn’t stare the way she could
She could never twist her tongue the way I could

Now that we are older
Things are pretty much the same
I am good at words
And she is good at games

So what’s up with those ideas?
That there is only one way to shine?
We each have our own strengths
And I have found mine

We each have our own path
The one that only we will take
So never mind those ego ideas
My own future I will make

I’ll work on what I am good at
And try to make it the best
I will find my own way to shine
And never mind about the rest
