Writing a poem in a lecture

Writing a poem in a lecture

By May Kwek

I know I shouldn’t be doing this
But sometimes I just can’t resist
The temptation of a rhyme
Not matter the situation or the time

But alas I am learning a lesson
About a slight problem with my mission
That writing a poem during a lecture
Might not really be in my nature

It is harder than it usually is
And my rhymes disappear into a mist
As I try to keep out the teacher
As he continues with the lecture

And the result is a headache
And a poem that’s hard to make
But this I would gladly take
So long as I have a poem on my plate!

Hence in this situation I find myself
And perhaps it is just as well
Or else I would be wasting my time
With nothing in my empty mind!

Getting there

Getting there

By May Kwek

I am getting there but by another way
Away from the track that others take
And though it is a lonely way
There’s no other that I would take

For the old track confines
You must run all the way
And even if you are tired
No word can you say

Whereas the new track is freedom
From these confinements
But I will stumble
And have to learn some lessons

But I will get there
I will finish all the same
Although it was by another road
That I laboriously came

At least on this road I will learn
Although it may have many turns
But I will take it anyway
And prove it right on finishing day

So I am getting there, I am getting there
But doing it my own way
Away from the well walked track
But having happier days

Yellow

Yellow

By May Kwek

Of all the bright colours
Yellow is among those I love best
Because it shines like the sun
And is cheery without rest

It reminds me of the flowers
That bloom to greet the day
And of the bright sun’s
Early morning rays

It is a colour that
 Reminds me of dogs
Because it looks so happy to see you
When you meet it on a walk

It is colour that recalls
The best days of your life
Of birthdays and balloons
And happiness without strife

So in my opinion
Yellow is simply great!
Because it has a cheerfulness
That no one can ever fake

Hopes for first day of JC/Poly

Hopes for the first day of JC/Poly

By May Kwek

Our first day, a new beginning
When our hopes and dreams start their flying
Soaring lightly on the gentle wind
While time’s next chapter quietly takes wing

Making new friends and seeing new faces
With many things happening in different places
With new lessons that need to be learnt
And experience’s wisdom to be heard

Facing all this I hope all will be well
Then what stories shall I have to tell!
What new adventures would my way
As I start every new day!

I hope I can weather any storms I shall face
And that on my life no scars they will trace
That with each new storm I will grow ever stronger
And that I will be a child no longer

I hope I shall not mourn and weep
But instead have memories I am glad to keep
To store up as an intangible treasure
Whose worth only I can measure

And so now on our first day
Let us keep a smiling face
And brave whatever comes our way
And march into the future come what may!

The Other side of Orientation

The other side of orientation

By May Kwek

Orientation ought to be fun
But I just can’t wait for it to be done
My shoulders and legs seem to ache
And I scarcely dare move my leg!

We have dances by the dozen
You know, the modern kind
The type where you jump
And leap up to the sky

With fast pace music
And a hundred screaming teens
To be honest it is nosier
Than a packed canteen

But then again it only comes once
And orientation is kind of fun
So let’s get up and go along
With the flow all day long

Wishing Upon A Star

Wishing upon a star

By May Kwek

When you wish upon a star
You wish a hundred million things
Pinning your hopes and dreams
On the stars’ bright wings

But why wish upon a star
As it dances through the night?
Perhaps because it glitters
Like our dreams ever so bright

Perhaps it symbolises our hope
Our belief that dreams come true
That because it shines it the sky
We can too

So wish upon a star
As many wishes as you like
Because sometimes just wishing
Is what keeps a dream alive
